I can’t stand going to the doctor and put it off as long as I can sometime. It doesn’t matter what type of doctor visit I’m going in for…dental, regular check up or gynecologist. I dread them all equally.
But since becoming a mother it seems I’ve had to make peace with doctors since they’re partial responsible for the well being of my son. Together the doctor and I are suppose to be a team that make decisions. But what happens when the doctor wants to make a decision that I don’t want to make?
While the doctors cant always see eye to eye with me for the most part we can come to a compromise on health alternatives. But with the recent media craze about the H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu) many doctors are insisting that children get an additional vaccine to protect them. I am not so sure its the best thing to force a new vaccine on young children. While I don’t judge any parent who has allowed their child to get this additional vaccine I’m not 100% sold on the idea.
Normally I would just avoid dealing with a doctor who can’t try to understand my concerns but the belief in the need to vaccinate seems to be coming from all doctors. These doctors are firmly telling you to get the extra vaccine to save your child. In some school it’s almost mandatory that your get the H1N1 flu shot. I have a real problem with the implication that I’m putting my child at risk if I don’t get the H1N1 Flu shot.
Now in general I understand and support the idea that children need to get vaccinations but I don’t agree that all vaccines are safe. So I always questions the doctor about the necessity of some vaccines and the time-frame recommended. As you can guess this hasn’t always gone over well with some doctors but as a mother I have to stand my ground. Doctors are human just like I am and cannot guarantee anything! When it comes to the health of my child I listen to suggestion but I will be the one to make the final decision.

Geez Louise! This has been weighing heavily on my mind today and I actually did a post on it as well. I feel so conflicted about this dern vaccine and as yet haven’t come to any conclusions. Hmmmm, i think i at least respect the fact that your doctor has an opinion one way or another – mine is just so vague/mysterious about his feelings, and i can’t read it. Right now Im leaning toward NOT doing it but havent decided for sure. *sigh* This is a tough one.
I have had the flu ONE time in my life (but have suffered many colds). I go the flu after taking a flu shot. I am not taking that daran shot nor are my children. We wash hands every time we into “shelter.” We use public transportation as little as possible and we don’t drink cow’s milk, too much mucous. I respect other people’s decisions.

I declined to have my son take this vaccination. I feel it is new and more experimental than anything. Anytime the government is offering anything free of charge as they are with H1N1 vaccination, it raises suspicion in me.
You usually I steer clear of all the flu shots, etc. However, since having a new baby in the house I actually got the H1N1 vac. for myself and my children on a whim. My husband will get it too. We are still using herbs and vitamins to build up our immune system, but I just couldn’t grapple with it mentally anymore.

I get the flu shot every year, because I used to get the flu every year. I think some people are just more susceptible to it and I work with the public, so that has always been another layer of risk. My four year old has asthma, so he gets the flu shot also. I had a foster child with the flu many years ago. I’d do anything to keep a child from getting the flu. You never know how the flu will play out. But with respect to H1, we’re passing. I don’t do new vaccinations. Just my distrust of medical recommendations with respect to vaccines. But I will admit, about 10 years ago my oldest child (now 18) got the chicken pox. I didn’t think chicken pox were a big deal so I passed on the chicken pot shot, because when he was 2 or 3, it was a new vaccine. What a mistake. I cannot tell you what a horrible time that was. He was miserable in a way that I can’t explain. I wanted to stab myself. (Sigh)
